Jessica’s Dream

Jessica’s Dream

by: Jessica Zhuo

Legend says “wishing upon a star makes the wish come true,” and at a young age, I believed it. I wished upon a star hoping that my wish would come true, but when I grew up I realized that it was just a legend. The wishes in my heart never die and legends will never stop me from achieving my dreams. One of my wishes is to become a dentist, someone who helps people smile with confidence and live a healthier life.

August 28, 1963, the famous African American Civil Rights activist leader, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous speech “ I Have a Dream” on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. His speech encouraged people to fight unremittingly for freedom and equality. The results of his dream changed the way the world looks at America. On August 28, 2013, the first black president, Barack Obama stood on the same steps of the Lincoln Memorial and marked the 50th anniversary of the “I Have a Dream“ entering a new climax, letting heaven and earth change their color.

As we all know, the United States is a dream paradise for immigrants. Two hundred years of immigration history have made countless extraordinary and great dreams come true. President Trump’s grandfather immigrated from Germany and President Obama’s father came from Kenya. The ancestors of immigrants came to this great country with dreams and their descendants have also achieved their great dreams through their own effort.

I was born in New York in a typical Chinese immigrant family. My maternal grandparents are the first generation of immigrants and on my paternal side, my dad is a first generation immigrant. Their dreams are very simple, they can work hard in a free country and give my brothers and me a stable and carefree family. For them, my brothers and I are all they have and our future is the continuation of their dreams…

I had a dream. In primary school, I dreamed of being the beautiful snow-white princess. So every day before I went to school, my grandma would give me cute hairstyles and beautiful dresses to wear to school. My teacher’s compliments like “ Jessica you look so cute today!” is what I wanted to hear every day.

I had a dream. In middle school, I dreamed of doing everything in my life with my own abilities, going to parties, late night movies with friends and going out whenever but dreams suffers setbacks. Most families have had someone who went through a rebellions-youth period, I seem to have my own overnight ideals and pursuits, own direction in life and my own unique personality.

I have a dream. As High school graduation approaches, it’s a time of reflection. The Season of graduation is also the Season of separation. Heart full of sentimentality, but at the same time, it’s full of gratitude. Appreciating the times I spent at school with my good friends and classmates and appreciating the teachers who have selflessly contributed to our dreams. It’s their selfless devotion that can set our dreams free! My dream of graduating from high school, first of all, should let me sincerely say a word to the teachers, thank you so much!

Life is born without ideals, although feeling ordinary, I want to pursue my dreams just like Dr. King’s dreams of freedom. So I will never leave a blank in my life. I would like to do my best to inject a trace of strength into the progress of human society while being a nondiscriminatory dentist. I aspire to have an enthusiastic and meaningful life, thus, I will persevere to reach my dream.
